John Lewis Myers, 88, died peacefully on March 3, 2026 surrounded by the love of his family at Bloomington Hospital.
John was born December 17, 1937 in Raglesville, Indiana to Ray H. Myers and Martha Louise (Chestnut) Myers.
He married the love of his life, Sue Anne Woodsmall, on September 20, 1973. Together they shared more than 52 years of love and memories with their children: Tammy (John) Fricke; Terry (Randy) Huff; Mark (Teresa) Myers; and Bruce (Angie) Myers. Sue preceded him in death just nine weeks prior on December 28, 2025.
John was a 1955 graduate of Odon High School.
John bought the Odon Journal in 1964 and informed northern Daviess County residents about events, large and small, for 61 years until he sold the newspaper in June of 2025. He was awarded the First Place Sellers Memorial Trophy for Best General Editorial of 1985 in competition with daily and weekly newspaper members by Indiana Editorial Association. He was a member of the Indiana Republican Editorial Association and served as its President in 1982. He was also a member of the Hoosier State Press and the Daviess County Historical Society.
John was very involved with politics. He was a Chairman of the Daviess County Republicans and GOP Chairman of Indiana's 8th Congressional District. He ran for U.S. Congress in 1988.
John was a member of Frady Memorial Church in Raglesville. He was a member of the Odon Masonic Lodge #303 F&AM and then the Elnora Masonic Lodge #616 F&AM when the two merged. He was a Noble of the Hadi Shrine Temple of Evansville, Indiana.
Above all, John loved his family, his friends, and his community. He served on the North Daviess School Board, the Odon Town Council, he was also a volunteer fireman, serving as a Fire Chief for a time.
John was named Grand Marshall of the Daviess County Fair Parade in 2023. John and Sue were named Grand Marshalls of the Odon Old Settlers Parade in 2011. He also won many other community awards.
John was an avid sports fan. He enthusiastically cheered on all his children, grandchildren and great-granddaughters in all their sports endeavors. He loved the ND Cougars, the IU Hoosiers, the Indianapolis Colts and the St. Louis Cardinals.
John is survived by his children, sister; Joan Vernon, brother-in-law; Bob (Pat) Woodsmall, 9 grandchildren; Derek Myers, Morgan Wininger, Macy (Michael) Wilson, Adam Myers, Emily Myers, Christa (Todd) Curtis, Brooke (Jared) Pyne, Lindsay (Shane) Skinner, Dani Fricke; and 12 great-grandchildren: Riley Stoll, Madison Wilson, Remy Wilson, Arie Wilson, Maevyn Wilson, Emma Curtis, Cam Curtis, Lane Skinner, Shaylee Skinner, Jacob Pyne, Josh Pyne, and Adalyn Pyne.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Sue; his son, John David Myers and grandson, Jordan Wininger.
Services to honor John will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Meng Funeral Home in Odon with Ken Fuller officiating.
Friends and family may call from 10:00AM until time of service. Masonic services begin prior to regular service at 1:00 PM.
John will be laid to rest at Walnut Hill Cemetery in Odon, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor his memory by donating to Parkview Village Christian Care.
