It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Rita Irene Stevens (Lehman, Nelson) of Waterford, Michigan. Born on March 4, 1951, Rita departed this world on February 24, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones.
Rita leaves behind a legacy through her son, Tim Lehman, his wife Jennifer, and her cherished granddaughters, Maggie and Stori Lehman. Her memory will live in the hearts of her family and friends.
Rita was a proud graduate of Pontiac Northern High School, class of 1969, and an esteemed alumnus of the University of Michigan where she earned an undergraduate degree and Central Michigan University where she earned a Master of Science. Rita dedicated over 25 years of her career to the American Red Cross.
Throughout her life, Rita pursued many hobbies and had a particular fondness for creating beautiful things. She skillfully crafted clothes, baskets, painted ceramics, intricate cross-stitching, handbags and even furniture. She was an avid knitter known for her colorful blankets, sweaters, and socks.
Rita spent most of her life in Waterford, Michigan, where she dedicated many years to caring for her now deceased parents, Marjorie and Lyman Stevens. In 2023, Rita moved to the Northern Virginia and Maryland areas to be closer to family.
Per her request, Rita will be cremated, a marker will be placed in Oaktown, Indiana near her parents and other beloved family members. She asked that no services be held.
In lieu of flowers or cards, the family kindly asks for donations in Rita's name to one of her favorite charities: The Humane Society of Michigan or the Red Cross Disaster Relief.
Rita's creativity, spunk and free spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May she forever rest in peace.
