Obituary

Sara Lynn Smiley, 64, of Odon, Indiana, passed away in the morning hours of May 31, 2026 at her home after many years of failing health. Born April 13, 1962 in Linton, Indiana, to Tommy B. and Sally A. (Hughes) Crecelius.

Sara was a graduate of Switz City High School, Class of 1980. She retired in 2014 after 30 years of dedicated service at Crane Army Ammunition Activity Base. During her career, she had many accomplishments and was a hard worker. She was a member of the Eastern Star.

On November 11, 2000, she married the love of her life, Steven D. Smiley, and he survives. They met while working at Crane. Together, they have one daughter, Olivia (Matthew) Findlay, of Odon. She is also dearly missed by her beloved grandchildren, Angus and Lola Findlay. Known to them as ‘Maw’, she loved spending time with her family, watching her favorite tv shows, cooking, yard work, painting and going on vacations with her family.

She is also survived by her sister, Lori Fulcher of Washington; her mother-in-law, Ginny (Leroy) Shafer of Odon; sister-in-law, Diana (Mike) Fesler of Newberry; brother-in-law, Brian (Susan) Smiley of Odon; nephew, Kirk (Eden) Crecelius of Petersburg; niece, Lexi Crecelius and her son, Zayn of Jasper; aunts, Connie (Gary) Scott and Susie (Ted) Soliday, both of Lyons and bonus aunt, Betty Sutton of Odon.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John Crecelius and father-in-law, Larry Smiley.

Funeral services to honor the life of Sara will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 5, 2026 at Meng Family Funeral Home in Odon with Rev. Bradley Rainey officiating. Sara will be laid to rest in Walnut Hill Cemetery in Odon.

Family and friends may call from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, June 4 and from 9:00 AM until the hour of service at 10:00 AM on Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
